Recently, this Wall Street Journal piece went viral for highlighting once again the same old points we’ve all seen a thousand times: men and women aren’t pairing up as much as they used to because men are scared of women’s high educational levels and fierce career ambitions. The tweet above summarizes the argument: American women have never been this resigned at the prospect of staying single, especially if the alternative is settling for men who aren’t as career-oriented as they are.
I want to get into the topic of careers and their impact on women’s dating prospects in another post. I also want to delve into the specific phrasing used here: “men who seemed turned off by her ambition,” which I think is pretty telling. For now, the concept I want to focus on is the idea that dating is the only activity you can put 10,000 hours into and end up right where you started, at square one.
